Frederick
From a very early age, Frederick loved numbers. Their predictability and stability comforted him in a world that felt overwhelming and chaotic. As he grew older, he spent more and more time in the back room of his father's store, poring over the old logbooks and creating new methods to track the orders and deliveries. While other boys his age dreamed of venturing out on their own and traveling across the world, Frederick was happy to stay put and keep his world in order.
He never married, but was great friends with Henrietta all his life. Even as the rest of the boys were enamored of her beauty, Frederick loved the kindness and gentleness she brought to everyone. Only a visit from Henrietta could pull Frederick out of the back room and put a smile on his face.

Isophene
Henrietta and Isophene were so close that folks forgot they weren’t sisters. When Henrietta got married at 18, all the fellas were broken-hearted to lose their chance with the belle of the county. But the marriage didn’t last long: Reginald went off on a work trip to New York City just 18 months after their big day and was never heard from again. When Isophene married her beau a year later, she insisted he move in with her, next-door to Henrietta, even though his family property was much larger and - so everyone whispered - less gloomy. Isophene and Richard were together 25 years but were rarely seen in the same room. They just had different interests, they’d both say. But Henrietta and Isophene were always side-by-side, and eventually became roommates after Richard died from a sudden heart attack in middle age.
They shared their gardens, their books, and their lives until they both died on the same day: Henrietta peacefully in her sleep one morning, and Isophene by stroke after her customary glass of sherry that evening. May we all be so lucky to find a bond such as theirs.

(Duchess) Serena
Serena was born the only daughter of a railroad magnate with more money than heart. She was raised in the east wing of their palatial home by a series of governesses, each of whom told her exciting tales of the world outside her windows. She adored maps and reading and promised herself that one day she would take a journey by sea to distant lands.
Her opportunity came soon after her eighteenth birthday, when her father invited a number of his business associates and their families for a week of parties and negotiations. Serena met her future husband, Robert, Duke of Markingham, there on the steps of her own home. Within three months they were wed and Serena began her journey to England, where she and her beau would reside.

Zebulon
Very few people could remember a time before Zebulon was mayor. Even in his early teens he’d carried himself with the firm steadiness of a leader, and when he did run for office at 29, he was elected with no contest. If you ever had a question about property rights or how to obtain a parade permit, all you had to do was pop by Zebulon’s office for a chat over a game of chess. No one was allowed to see him, you see, without trying their hand at his favorite game of strategy. Seeing someone handle The White and The Black told him everything he needed to know about a person’s character, he'd always say. Every year, to her consternation, Great Aunt Enid would have to plop down on his creaky leather chair and play for the honor of reserving the gazebo for the church picnic. And every year, Zebulon would start the game with a glint in his eye and his favorite proverb, “The game of chess is a lake in which a mosquito can bathe and an elephant can drown.”
If you’re lucky enough to pass by the office on this special day, you just might hear Enid’s colorful reply echoing across the courtyard.

Henry
Throughout the decade he spent working towards his promotion to Features editor at a big city newspaper, Henry became more and more disgusted by the organization’s preference for sensational headlines and gossip. He believed in the importance of serious journalism, and prided himself on pursuing the stories that held the wealthy and powerful to account whenever necessary.
One terrible November day, he reached his limit and realized he could never change the system from within. He needed to get out of the city entirely and start something new based on his own guiding principles. He and his wife, who was pregnant with their eldest daughter, Henrietta, moved to town on New Years’ Eve, and by the next year, Henry’s own newspaper was thriving. The local newsroom became known for its in-depth articles, some of which were syndicated in papers all across the country. Though he and the mayor, Zebulon, strongly disagreed on matters from time to time, they developed a deep and abiding friendship.

The Deerhawk Oracle Deck
The whole project started with Deer and Hawk. As the Deerhawk totem collection continued to grow, I realized that something more could be done with these beautiful creatures. With a combination of meditation and research, I recorded an individual message for each animal and element in the deck, and worked with them until the right balance was achieved. This 30-card oracle deck is the result of that project, and it’s available for you to use, too!
Want to get a sense of what it’s like to work with the deck? Try this spinner I created on my Inspiration page and get some Deerhawk wisdom right here, right now.
